The plant exhibits a climbing or scandent growth habit with branches that are densely covered in yellowish-brown stellate tomentum. The leaf features include:

  • Entire margins that occasionally display small apical serrations.

Its solitary flowers emerge from the leaf axils on hairy pedicels. The corolla is orange-red to yellow-green, housing four didynamous stamens that extend slightly beyond the throat.

The genus name honors the German botanist Dietrich Brandis, who made significant contributions to forestry in India. The specific epithet hancei commemorates Henry Fletcher Hance, a British diplomat and botanist who extensively studied the Chinese flora during the nineteenth century.
