American pokeweed
Phytolacca americana
Phytolacca americana, commonly known as American pokeweed, is a large herbaceous perennial native to North …
Endemic to the grasslands and coastal dunes of the Buenos Aires Province in Argentina, Phytolacca tetramera faces a severe threat of extinction. Known locally as the ombusillo, this geophytic species grows as a herbaceous shrub reaching heights of 100 to 150 centimeters.
The plant was first described in 1909 by the Belgian botanist Lucien Leon Hauman-Merck. It occupies a very narrow ecological range, stretching primarily from La Plata to the Samborombón Bay.
This geophytic species exhibits unique structural adaptations to the pampean grasslands. Its aerial parts die back during the cold winter months, with new growth regenerating from the robust root system in spring.
Key morphological characteristics include:
Cytologically, this species is an octaploid with a chromosome number of n=36, distinguishing it from other regional relatives.
Spring, primarily in November
Scientific interest in this species centers on its potential pharmaceutical applications. The fruits contain active triterpenoid saponins, including phytolaccosides B, E, and F, which exhibit strong antifungal activity against human pathogens.
Due to its critical conservation status, wild harvesting is strictly prohibited, and research relies on cultivated or nursery-propagated specimens. It has no horticultural or agricultural applications.
Because the species is dioecious, isolated populations often consist of single-sex patches that spread vegetatively through root sprouting, making sexual reproduction and seed production extremely rare in the wild.
The plant produces a highly toxic sap that renders it virtually immune to most defoliating insects that affect other native flora.
Its generic name combines the Greek word phyton (plant) and the Latin lacca (red dye), while the specific epithet tetramera refers to its four-parted flower structure.
