Hannoa kitombetombe: Rare Endemic Tree of the DRC

Occurring solely in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hannoa kitombetombe remains one of the region's least understood endemic trees. This species is restricted to moist tropical forest habitats where it faces significant ecological challenges. Due to continuous forest degradation and land conversion, its wild populations have declined dramatically.

Morphology

Hannoa kitombetombe is a woody tree featuring pinnately compound leaves arranged in an alternate pattern. The leaflets are typically elliptic, possessing a coriaceous texture and entire margins. Small, white or cream-colored flowers are arranged in terminal panicles at the ends of the branches.

Its fruit is a drupe that contains a single seed, a structure characteristic of the genus Hannoa. The species relies on intact forest canopy and local animal vectors for seed dispersal and reproduction.

Interesting facts

  • This species is highly endemic to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, meaning it is found nowhere else on Earth.
  • It is officially listed as threatened due to severe habitat loss caused by logging, agriculture, and urban expansion.
