Portulaca mexicana
Portulaca mexicana is a low-growing succulent plant native to numerous states across Mexico. First described …
Endemic to the central regions of Australia within the Northern Territory, Portulaca filsonii thrives as a unique succulent perennial. James Hamlyn Willis first described this species in 1975, utilizing a specimen carefully collected from the rocky landscapes of Kings Canyon in 1966.
The specific epithet honors Rex Bertram Filson, acknowledging his significant contributions to the field of botany.
The structural characteristics of Portulaca filsonii include a notably prostrate growth habit typical of many resilient perennial succulents. The plant develops a distinctive swollen root system, supporting opposite leaves adapted to its arid native environment.
During its reproductive phase, it produces flowers featuring a tubular corolla that diverges into four prominent pink spreading lobes. These unique floral structures are further characterized by the presence of two partially fused sepals at their base.
Initially introduced to the scientific community as a member of the Portulaca genus, the species later underwent a taxonomic revision. In 1977, Willis created a new combination, placing it under the accepted name Sedopsis filsonii according to the Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria.
