Mexican Purslane
Portulaca mexicana
Portulaca mexicana is a low-growing succulent plant native to numerous states across Mexico. First described …
Found scattered across the dry terrains of Southern Africa, Portulaca rhodesiana is a hardy succulent adapted to warm, arid climates. Botanists R. A. Dyer and E. A. Bruce officially described the species, noting its occurrence in regions historically known as Rhodesia, which gives the plant its scientific name. Today, its natural range is known to cover Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, and parts of South Africa, particularly the Mpumalanga province.
This species displays typical xerophytic adaptations characteristic of the Portulaca genus. The plant features fleshy, water-storing tissues in its stems and leaves, which enable it to withstand the intense sun and prolonged dry seasons of the Southern African landscape. The foliage is generally compact to reduce surface area and minimize water loss.
Its reproductive cycle involves the production of small flowers that are highly dependent on sunlight for opening. Following pollination, the plant develops seed capsules containing tiny seeds adapted for wind or water dispersal during occasional storms.
The name rhodesiana is a historical geographical reference to the region where it was extensively documented, now known as Zimbabwe. This species thrives in rocky or sandy soils where other, less specialized plants might struggle to survive.
