Portulaca mexicana
Portulaca mexicana is a low-growing succulent plant native to numerous states across Mexico. First described …
Endemic to the northwestern regions of Somalia, Portulaca somalica is a specialized succulent adapted to harsh, arid environments. As a member of the Portulacaceae family, it shares the extreme drought-resistant qualities typical of purslanes. The geographical isolation of this species contributes to its distinctive ecological profile, representing a unique component of the resilient flora found in the Horn of Africa.
As a true xerophyte, this species possesses modified, thickened stems and leaves that function as water reservoirs. Its compact growth habit protects the root system from overheating and allows for the most efficient use of scarce precipitation. The plant's structure is ideally adapted to extreme insolation and poor sandy or rocky soils.
In the wild, the plant has the status of a strict endemic. According to official botanical databases, the only place on the planet where the growth of Portulaca somalica has been recorded is the northwestern territories of Somalia.
