Mexican Purslane
Portulaca mexicana
Portulaca mexicana is a low-growing succulent plant native to numerous states across Mexico. First described …
Portulaca suffrutescens flourishes as a resilient perennial species native to the arid landscapes of the southwestern United States and northern to central Mexico. Botanists recognize this species for its distinct stiff and erect growth habit, which sets it apart from many creeping relatives. The plant belongs to the Portulacaceae family and thrives in dry, challenging desert environments.
This perennial species develops from robust tuberous roots that anchor its stiff, erect stems. The central stems can reach heights of up to 30 centimeters in mature specimens. Its foliage consists of distinctively needle-like leaves, which are round in cross-section and grow up to 3 centimeters in length.
During its blooming phase, the plant produces vibrant flowers that emerge in shades of orange, copper, or bronze, measuring up to 25 millimeters across. The reproductive cycle concludes with the formation of black seeds, which are uniquely characterized by a row of small bumps running along one side.
The common name shrubby purslane directly references its somewhat woody, erect growth pattern. The presence of tuberous roots serves as a critical evolutionary adaptation, allowing the plant to survive prolonged dry periods and store vital moisture in its native desert habitats.
