Morphology

The plant develops a vigorous system of robust branches bearing alternate leaves with a remarkably embossed texture. The complex network of secondary veins is particularly prominent and raised on the underside of the leaf blade, fully justifying its Latin specific epithet nervosa.

The globally oval-shaped leaf presents a classic asymmetrical base, a true hallmark of the family, as well as a finely serrated margin. At the end of the summer period or in early autumn, the inconspicuous flowering definitively gives way to small fleshy drupes that attract a multitude of small forest vertebrates.
