Described in 1907 by Swiss botanist Émile Hassler, Simaba praecox grows as a wild woody plant in the ecosystems of Paraguay and neighboring South American regions. This species belongs to the genus Simaba, which is documented under the family Simaroubaceae. Like its relatives, it has developed specialized chemical defenses to survive in seasonal dry forests.

Morphology

The vegetative structure of this plant features pinnately compound leaves that grow alternately along its rigid branches. Individual leaflets are coriaceous and oblong, helping the plant minimize water loss during dry seasons. The small, pale flowers form terminal panicles, which eventually mature into small, dry, single-seeded drupes.

Applications

Although species within the genus Simaba are rich in bioactive quassinoids historically used as bitter tonics, no specific commercial applications exist for this plant. Its current value remains ecological rather than agricultural or industrial.

Interesting facts

The species name praecox translates to 'early' or 'premature', referencing its tendency to produce flowers before new foliage develops. This adaptation allows the plant to attract early pollinators without leaf cover blocking the flowers.
