The visual signature of Agathis brownii includes a robust, cylindrical bole covered in smooth, exfoliating bark that peels away to reveal fresh, lighter-colored patches underneath. Its robust branches form a dense, rounded crown in older individuals. The leaves are persistent, distinctly broad and flat for a coniferous species, possessing a tough, coriaceous texture with fine, parallel veins running along their length.
Reproductive structures are separated into distinct male and female cones on the same tree. The ovulate female cones develop into substantial, spherical structures comprised of tightly overlapping woody scales. Once fully ripe, these cones shatter on the branches, scattering flattened, winged seeds that are carried by forest breezes to secure the next generation.
