Agathis flavescens
Thriving exclusively in the remote mountainous regions of Peninsular Malaysia, the rare conifer Agathis flavescens exhibits a highly restricted natural distribution. It is strictly confined to the high-altitude quartzitic soils of Gunung Tahan and Gunung Rabong, where it forms small, isolated populations within the upper montane rainforests.
Sometimes considered a variety of Agathis dammara, this unique kauri tree is characterized by its yellowish foliage and relatively modest stature compared to its giant relatives. With an estimated total population of less than a thousand mature individuals, it remains a fragile component of the Malaysian highland flora.

Morphology
Unlike its towering cousins, Agathis flavescens typically reaches a more modest height of about 12 meters, with a trunk diameter approaching one meter. The tree possesses several distinguishing physical characteristics:
- A notably fragile bark that ranges from green to brownish in color.
- Dense resin blisters dotting the surface of the trunk.
- Young shoots displaying a distinct yellowish tint.
Its yellowish-green leaves are elliptic to obovate, measuring up to 6.3 centimeters in length, and feature a contrasting bluish-green underside. The reproductive structures include cylindrical male cones borne on prominent stalks, alongside spherical female cones that turn a deep purplish hue as they mature over a two-year period.

The specific epithet of Agathis flavescens refers to the distinctive yellowish hue of the plant's leaves, a characteristic that is particularly pronounced in its native habitat. Researchers have suggested that the frequent yellowing of the foliage may be a natural adaptation or a response to the nutrient-poor quartzitic soils where the species predominantly grows.
Due to its extreme rarity and highly restricted distribution, the entire global population is estimated to consist of fewer than 1,000 mature trees. Fortunately, these remaining populations are located within protected permanent forest reserves, offering some safeguard against habitat destruction.
