The discovery of Agathis jurassica occurred in 1889 near the Farrs Hills, within an area that has since yielded thousands of incredibly preserved individual fossil specimens. The remarkable preservation of these fossils, predominantly found as stark white siliceous impressions, is attributed to a rapid inundation of volcanic ash that trapped the surrounding flora and fauna.
This sudden geological event captured an entire ecosystem, including a diverse range of insects and fish, alongside the kauri pine forest where this species flourished. While some modern taxonomists have debated its exact generic placement, the fossils remain a cornerstone in understanding Gondwanan paleobotany.
