Endemic to the island of New Guinea, Agathis labillardierei stands as a towering canopy component of tropical forest ecosystems. It thrives across a remarkable variety of habitats, from low-lying peat swamps to mountainous terrain at elevations up to 2,000 meters. The species plays a critical ecological role in both Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian provinces of Western New Guinea.
This magnificent conifer belongs to the ancient Araucariaceae family. Historically, local populations and commercial enterprises have highly prized its wood, leading to extensive logging activities. Its diverse habitat adaptations allow it to grow on complex soils, including ultramafic substrates, serpentine, and limestone.

Morphology
Towering up to 60 meters in height, the tree develops a massive trunk that can reach 2 meters in circumference. The dark brown bark covers a straight bole, which supports a crown formed by diagonally ascending branches. Younger branches typically exhibit a cylindrical cross-section, while secondary branches are notably grooved.
The foliage consists of oppositely arranged leaves that measure 7.5 to 10 centimeters in length and 1.8 to 3 centimeters in width. These oblong-lanceolate to elliptical leaves possess a glossy underside and a blunt to slightly acute apex. They are attached to the stem by a stout, short petiole.
Reproductive structures include broad-cylindrical male pollen cones and greenish, globose female seed cones. The female cones expand to about 8.5 centimeters in length and contain angular cone scales. The resulting seeds are equipped with a distinct wing, facilitating wind dispersal.
Applications
The wood of Agathis labillardierei ranks among the most valuable timber resources found on the island of New Guinea. Commercial loggers harvest it extensively for construction, carpentry, and various high-quality wood products. The straight, massive trunks yield exceptional lumber that is highly sought after in regional and international markets.
Interesting facts
Populations of this tree naturally separate from the closely related Agathis robusta along geographical boundaries formed by the Sepik River and Mount Hagen. Despite its ability to tolerate extreme soil conditions, large-scale deforestation for oil palm plantations poses a significant threat to its lowland subpopulations.
