Lance-leaved kauri
Agathis lanceolata
A towering, vulnerable coniferous tree species endemic to the dense rainforests of New Caledonia.
Native to the lush montane rainforests of Borneo, Agathis lenticula is a majestic coniferous tree belonging to the Araucariaceae family. Towering up to 45 meters in height, this evergreen species thrives in the elevated regions of Sabah and Sarawak, particularly around Mount Kinabalu and the Crocker Range. Its specific epithet, 'lenticula', is derived from Latin, aptly describing its distinctive leaves that resemble a double-convex lens.
This magnificent tree is a vital component of its ecosystem, typically found at altitudes ranging from 1,050 to 1,700 meters. Often growing in forests dominated by dipterocarps and oaks, it shares its habitat with a diverse array of montane flora. Unfortunately, its restricted range and historical overexploitation have made it a subject of significant conservation concern.
Trunk and Bark: Agathis lenticula develops a massive, straight trunk reaching up to 45 meters. The outer bark is greyish-white and exfoliating in irregular plates, revealing a reddish-brown inner bark that produces a white resin.
Leaves: The foliage exhibits notable dimorphism. Juvenile leaves are somewhat rounded and pointed, growing up to 10 centimeters long. In contrast, mature leaves are distinctly lenticular (lens-shaped), measuring 5 to 7 centimeters in length and 1.8 to 2.4 centimeters in width. The mature leaves feature an acute apex and a glaucous, bluish-green underside.
Reproductive Organs: The species is monoecious. Male pollen cones are cylindrical, growing up to 4 centimeters long and 1 centimeter thick. The female seed cones are spherical to semi-elliptical, measuring approximately 2.8 centimeters in length and up to 4.5 centimeters in diameter.
