Lance-leaved kauri
Agathis lanceolata
A towering, vulnerable coniferous tree species endemic to the dense rainforests of New Caledonia.
Towering above the dense tropical canopy, Agathis palmerstoni stands as a monumental conifer in the Araucariaceae family. This majestic tree is renowned for its perfectly straight, cylindrical trunk and immense height, dominating the forest landscape. Historically, indigenous communities and early settlers valued the species for its exceptionally durable wood and fragrant resin, which played a significant role in local economies. Today, it remains a vital ecological anchor in its native habitat, supporting diverse wildlife and contributing to the complex architecture of rainforest ecosystems.
The architectural structure of Agathis palmerstoni is characterized by a massive, columnar trunk that sheds its bark in large, irregular flakes, creating a mottled surface of grays and browns. The crown is expansive and dome-shaped in mature specimens, supported by stout, spreading branches. Its foliage consists of leathery, opposite leaves that are remarkably broad for a conifer, featuring parallel venation and a glossy, dark green upper surface.
As a gymnosperm, it reproduces via cones rather than true flowers. The male pollen cones are cylindrical and typically appear in the leaf axils, while the female seed cones are large, globular, and heavily scaled. Upon maturity, the female cones disintegrate entirely while still on the tree, releasing numerous winged seeds that are dispersed by the wind to colonize new forest gaps.

The exceptionally clear and straight-grained timber of Agathis palmerstoni has been highly prized for specialized woodworking and construction. The wood's uniform texture and pale color make it ideal for crafting high-quality furniture, boat building, and musical instruments. Furthermore, the tree yields a valuable resin known as copal, which was historically harvested for use in varnishes, linoleum production, and traditional medicinal applications.
