Towering majestically above the tropical rainforest canopy, Agathis philippensis commands attention with its massive, cylindrical trunk and soaring height. This impressive coniferous evergreen tree, belonging to the ancient Araucariaceae family, is renowned for its production of high-quality resin known commercially as Manila copal. Reaching remarkable heights of up to 60 meters, it serves as a prominent canopy or emergent species within montane and lower montane forest ecosystems across its native range in the Philippines and eastern Indonesia.

Morphology
The tree exhibits a highly distinctive growth habit, featuring a straight, unbuttressed trunk that can reach diameters of up to 2 meters. Its bark is typically greyish-brown to dark brown, exfoliating in large, irregular flakes that expose a smoother, reddish-brown underbark. The foliage consists of coriaceous, leathery leaves arranged in opposite or sub-opposite pairs along the stout stems.
These leaves are generally elliptic to ovate-lanceolate, boasting a glossy dark green upper surface and characteristic fine, parallel venation without a prominent midrib. As a gymnosperm, it produces reproductive structures in the form of cones rather than true flowers. The female seed cones are massive, globose to ovoid in shape, and mature to release winged seeds that are efficiently dispersed by the wind.
Applications
The most significant economic product derived from this species is Manila copal, a valuable resin exuded from the bark when tapped or injured. This natural resin has been historically and commercially important in the manufacture of high-quality varnishes, lacquers, linoleum, and printing inks.
Locally, the resin is widely utilized for making torches, incense, and traditional medicines. In addition to its non-timber forest products, the tree yields a high-quality softwood timber. The wood is pale, straight-grained, and easily workable, making it highly sought after for interior joinery, panelling, and the construction of musical instruments, though over-harvesting has severely limited its legal commercial availability.
