Lance-leaved kauri
Agathis lanceolata
A towering, vulnerable coniferous tree species endemic to the dense rainforests of New Caledonia.
Towering up to 60 meters above the forest floor, Agathis spathulata commands a majestic presence in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. This impressive evergreen conifer thrives at elevations ranging from 900 to 1,980 meters, particularly within the Eastern Highlands, the Owen Stanley Range, and the rugged terrain of New Britain. Although recognized by botanists for many years, it was formally described in 1980 as a subspecies of Agathis robusta (Agathis robusta subsp. nesophila) before being widely acknowledged under its current synonym.
As a vital component of the montane forest canopy, this magnificent tree plays a crucial role in its native ecosystem. Unfortunately, the expansion of human activities and deforestation have severely impacted its natural environment, leading to a precarious conservation status.
The structural features of Agathis spathulata demonstrate a remarkable adaptation to its montane environment. The foliage consists of leaves arranged in decussate opposite pairs, showing distinct variations between developmental stages.
On mature trees, the leaves measure between 7 and 10 centimeters in length and 18 to 30 millimeters in width. In contrast, juvenile specimens exhibit significantly larger leaves, reaching up to 13 centimeters long and 45 millimeters broad.
Reproductive structures are equally distinctive, characterized by prominent oval cones. These seed-bearing cones range from 8.5 to 10 centimeters in length with a diameter of 6.5 to 7.5 centimeters. Upon reaching maturity, the cones naturally disintegrate while still attached to the branches, effectively dispersing their winged seeds into the surrounding forest.
