Lance-leaved kauri
Agathis lanceolata
A towering, vulnerable coniferous tree species endemic to the dense rainforests of New Caledonia.
Named in honor of the renowned Veitch horticultural dynasty, Agathis veitchii contributes to the remarkable diversity of ancient Southern Hemisphere conifers. This robust evergreen tree forms an integral component of the upper canopy in its native range, characterized by its impressive stature and distinctive broad-leaved foliage. While perhaps less globally recognized than some of its relatives, it remains an important subject of taxonomic study and ecological conservation. The tree continues to anchor complex forest food webs and influence the microclimate of its immediate surroundings.
The main trunk of Agathis veitchii is typically stout and straight, enveloped in a thick bark that continuously sheds in irregular scales to prevent the buildup of epiphytic growth. Its crown architecture evolves over time, shifting from a conical shape in youth to a broad, spreading canopy in maturity. The foliage consists of tough, oppositely arranged leaves with a characteristic ovate to lanceolate shape and a prominent parallel venation network.
The species is monoecious, producing both pollen and seed-bearing structures on the same individual. The female cones are large, globose, and heavily lignified, taking over a year to reach full maturity. Upon ripening, the cone axis breaks down completely, allowing the wind to disperse the lightweight, terminally winged seeds across the forest floor.

The straight-grained, easily workable timber of Agathis veitchii has local economic significance, particularly for interior finishing, cabinetry, and general construction where durability and a clear finish are desired. Like other members of its genus, it exudes a protective resin when damaged, which indigenous populations have traditionally utilized for waterproofing, adhesives, and ceremonial purposes.
