Endemic to a highly restricted region in Florida, the critically rare Manasota pawpaw ranks among the most threatened plant species in North America. Restricted to Manatee and Sarasota counties, it occupies remnants of turkey oak sandhills and dry xeric flatwoods. The natural habitat of this species has undergone severe reduction and fragmentation over the past decades.

Due to the critical decline of wild individuals, botanical institutions have prioritized active conservation strategies. With only an estimated 20 to 25 plants left in their native habitat, the species relies heavily on human intervention to avoid extinction.

Morphology

The species Asimina manasota develops characteristics adapted to the arid environments of Florida.

Its branches bear leathery leaves and its flowers, although inconspicuous, present the trimerous structure characteristic of Annonaceae. The flowers then produce fruits in the form of fleshy berries, although their fruiting remains limited in the wild.
