Endemic to the wet tropical rainforests of the Maluku Islands, Epipremnum ceramense grows as a massive climbing vine in the family Araceae. This giant plant thrives on steep slopes along the margins of humid equatorial forests.

The species was first described by botanists Adolf Engler and Kurt Krause, and later moved to the genus Epipremnum. Its specific name directly honors Seram Island, historically known as Ceram Island, where the plant was collected.

Morphology

Epipremnum ceramense is a giant evergreen vine that can grow up to 20 meters in length. Its mature stems reach a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters, with internodes measuring between 1.5 and 18 centimeters long.

The plant features distinct structural characteristics:

Foliage: Large, leathery, asymmetrical leaf blades measuring 50 to 90 centimeters in length and 20 to 48 centimeters in width.
Inflorescence: A single yellow spadix up to 34 centimeters long, enclosed by a boat-shaped spathe.
Fruit: Green berries that ripen to a bright orange color, containing curved light brown seeds.

Interesting facts

The specific epithet ceramense refers directly to Seram Island, which was historically known as Ceram Island. This island is part of the Maluku archipelago in Indonesia.

As the plant climbs, it produces exceptionally long, free-hanging aerial roots. These roots search for moisture and cling to steep slopes at elevations ranging from 45 to 60 meters above sea level.
