Morphology
The growth habit of this species is characterized by its dual-phase lifecycle, transitioning from a terrestrial seedling to an epiphytic adult. Stems are slender, green, and produce abundant aerial rootlets along the nodes to secure a firm grip on bark surfaces.
The foliage displays distinct heterophylly as the plant matures:
- Juvenile leaves are small, entire, and ovate, growing close to the host tree in a shingle-like pattern.
- Adult leaves are larger, elongated, and borne on long petioles that feature a prominent sheath.
- Leaf venation consists of dense pinnate lateral veins that run parallel toward the margin.
The inflorescence, typical of Araceae, features a thick spadix subtended by a boat-shaped spathe. The spathe opens briefly to expose the bisexual flowers before shedding as the fruit matures.
Applications
As a wild species, it has no major commercial or agricultural applications. It serves primarily as a subject of botanical study and contributes to the biodiversity of the Philippine forest canopy.
