Epipremnum foraminiferum: Perforated Tropical Vine Profile

Characterized by unique perforations along its leaf midrib, Epipremnum foraminiferum thrives as a root-climbing liana in the humid forests of Southeast Asia. This species is highly sought after by collectors of rare tropical flora due to its unusual leaf fenestration. It plays an important ecological role by providing shelter for canopy-dwelling micro-organisms.

Living Pulse

Morphology

The foliage of this climbing vine displays a unique pattern of small, neat holes, or foramina, situated close to the main vein. These fenestrations develop as the leaf matures, while juvenile leaves remain completely intact. The blade is typically ovate-lanceolate and dark green.

Stems are slender but robust, producing numerous adventitious roots that anchor the plant securely to tree bark. Petioles are moderately long and channelled. The inflorescence consists of a small, cylindrical spadix surrounded by a protective spathe.

Interesting facts

The specific epithet foraminiferum translates to "bearing holes," referencing the distinctive pinholes in the foliage. Scientists believe these openings reduce the drag force of tropical downpours and strong winds. Additionally, the holes allow dappled sunlight to filter through to the lower leaves.
