Drumstick Tree
Moringa oleifera
Moringa oleifera, commonly known as the drumstick tree, is a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree native to …
Found primarily in southwestern Madagascar, Moringa hildebrandtii stands out due to its massive, water-storing trunk. Although now considered extinct in the wild, the species survives through the dedicated horticultural practices of local communities.
This tree is deeply intertwined with local culture, frequently planted near villages for its utility and spiritual significance. It remains a focal point for conservationists studying Malagasy flora.
The most prominent feature of this species is its massive, water-storing trunk that can reach a height of up to 20 meters, giving it a baobab-like appearance. The bark acts as a succulent reservoir, helping the plant survive prolonged dry seasons.
Its large, pinnate compound leaves can grow up to 1 meter in length, spreading around the trunk in an umbrella-like fashion. Young specimens exhibit distinctively deep red leaf rachises and stem tips.
During the flowering period, it produces large sprays of small, ivory-white flowers. These develop into fruits up to 50 centimeters long, containing 6 to 12 large, nut-shaped seeds protected by a light brown shell.
Indigenous populations cultivate this tree for its medicinal properties, utilizing various parts of the plant in traditional remedies. It is also grown for ornamental and cultural purposes around habitations.
Although it is functionally extinct in its native wild habitats, the species has been kept from total extinction solely through human cultivation and traditional horticulture.
For many years, scientists believed it originated from the west coast of Madagascar, but ethnobotanical research later revealed its true native range was in the extreme southwest.
