An extinct species of conifer known from fossil foliage from the Mesozoic era.
Paleobotanists use the form genus Pagiophyllum to classify specific types of fossilized coniferous foliage. Spanning a vast temporal range from the Carboniferous to the Cretaceous period, these remains have been discovered across the globe, indicating a wide distribution of these ancient gymnosperms. Researchers have associated plants bearing this foliage type with several different conifer groups, primarily the families Araucariaceae and Cheirolepidiaceae.
Fossilized specimens of Pagiophyllum consist predominantly of sterile, leaf-bearing branches. This form taxon allows scientists to categorize isolated vegetative remains that share similar leaf arrangements and shapes, even when the complete reproductive structures are not preserved attached to the vegetative shoots.
Significant discoveries of Pagiophyllum fossils have been made in the Paleorrota geopark in Brazil. These specific finds originate from the Santa Maria and Caturrita Formations, dating back to the Upper Triassic period.
