Populating the tropical dry forests of Hispaniola, Simarouba berteroana grows as a medium-sized woody tree. It plays an important role in the local forest canopy and ecosystem stability of the Caribbean region.

The species was formally documented by botanists Leopold Krug and Ignatz Urban. It thrives primarily in the karst and limestone regions of both Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
