Hailing from the misty mountain ridges of Northeast India, Amentotaxus assamica is a highly threatened conifer. Commonly known as the Assam Catkin Yew, it is endemic to a few valleys in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.
The species grows within pristine, wet temperate forests where it thrives under the shade of mature broadleaf canopies. Due to logging, infrastructure projects, and habitat clearance, its remaining populations are severely fragmented.

Morphology
This evergreen tree can reach a height of up to 20 meters, with a trunk that typically branches close to the ground. Its bark is smooth, colored whitish-grey, and peels off in thin, delicate flakes.
Key morphological features include:
- Leaves: The needles are linear to linear-lanceolate, often curved in a falcate or S-shape, measuring 7 to 11 centimeters in length. The upper surface is dark green and smooth due to the complete absence of sclereid cells.
- Stomatal Bands: The lower surface displays two distinct white bands covered in a thick layer of natural wax.
- Cones: Male pollen cones are arranged in terminal catkin-like racemes up to 4.5 centimeters long, containing 8 to 10 pairs of cones.
- Seeds: The seeds are enclosed in an ellipsoid aril that matures from a glossy green to a striking yellow or purple color, measuring up to 3.5 centimeters in length.

Pollen shedding occurs from March to April, with seeds maturing from August to November
Applications
The Mishmi people traditionally use the durable, aged wood of this tree to construct house pillars and posts, while fallen branches serve as local firewood.
Recent scientific studies have explored the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using extracts from the bark of this species, demonstrating notable antibacterial activity against pathogens like Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
Interesting facts
Known locally as Sanglee by the Mishmi tribe, this conifer provides crucial nesting shelter and habitat for local montane birds, small mammals, and insects.
Its seeds, enclosed in fleshy and colorful arils, serve as a valuable food source for local birds, which in turn act as the primary agents for seed dispersal throughout the dense forest understory.
