The extinct coniferous species Brachyphyllum gippslandicum provides valuable insights into the ancient flora of the Southern Hemisphere. Classified within the Araucariaceae family, this fossil plant was first described from the Gippsland carbonaceous area in Victoria, Australia. Its discovery contributes to our understanding of the prehistoric ecosystems that thrived during its existence.
As with most representatives of the fossil morphogenus Brachyphyllum, the vegetative shoots of Brachyphyllum gippslandicum were characterized by a highly specific structure. The branches of the ancient tree were densely covered with short, rigid, and thick leaves that were closely pressed to the stem.
The leaf blades were scale-like or thickened in shape, which was an effective evolutionary adaptation to the environmental conditions of that time. Such needle morphology allowed prehistoric plants to minimize moisture loss. The impressions preserved in carbonaceous rocks demonstrate a characteristic spiral arrangement of the needles on the shoots.
