Brucea javanica
A bitter, medicinal shrub native to Southeast Asia and Northern Australia, valued for its bioactive …
Endemic to the coastal and subcoastal forests of East Africa, this rare woody species is facing severe pressure from human activities. First described by botanist B. Stannard, it remains a plant of high conservation interest due to its restricted distribution. Immediate conservation efforts are required to protect its dwindling natural habitats.
This woody plant typically grows as a small shrub or understory tree in lowland forests. Its leaves are compound and pinnate, arranged alternately along the branches, which is characteristic of the genus Brucea. The flowers are small, unisexual or bisexual, and arranged in axillary inflorescences.
The fruits are notably larger than those of other members of the genus, hence the specific epithet macrocarpa. They are drupaceous, presenting an ellipsoidal shape, and contain a single bitter seed rich in quassinoids.
The specific epithet macrocarpa translates directly to large-fruited, highlighting the key morphological feature that distinguishes this species from its close relatives. Due to its extremely limited range in southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania, very few specimens have been collected and studied in the wild.
