Araucaria fibrosa: Ancient Fossil Conifer from Antarctica

The extinct conifer Araucaria fibrosa once formed part of the diverse forests that covered Antarctica during the Upper Cretaceous period. Paleobotanists identified its remains at Cape Lamb on Vega Island, proving that a much warmer climate existed on the continent in the past. This species highlights the deep evolutionary history of the genus in extreme southern latitudes.

Morphology

The fossilized remains of Araucaria fibrosa consist primarily of petrified wood fragments that exhibit remarkably well-preserved cellular structures. Microscopic examination of the xylem reveals classic araucarioid pitting, with bordered pits arranged in densely packed, alternating rows on the radial walls of the tracheids. The presence of distinct growth rings provides compelling anatomical evidence of distinct seasonal variations in the ancient Antarctic climate.

The specific epithet fibrosa highlights the pronounced fibrous texture observed in the type specimens. The wood rays are predominantly uniseriate, and the well-defined resin structures firmly place this ancient taxon within the Araucariaceae family, which formed the canopy of expansive Gondwanan forests during the Mesozoic era.

Interesting facts

Researchers initially named this fossil plant Araucaria antarctica in 2001. After realizing that the original name was taxonomically illegitimate, the authors officially replaced it with Araucaria fibrosa in 2009.
