Araucaria goroensis: The Endangered Goro Araucaria

Endemic to the unique terrestrial ecosystems of New Caledonia, Araucaria goroensis emerges as a majestic and highly endangered coniferous tree classified within the ancient family Araucariaceae. This conifer was formally recognized as a new species in 2017 after phylogenetic and morphological studies separated it from the closely related Araucaria muelleri.

In its natural habitat, the tree is inextricably linked to the acidic, heavy-metal-rich soils derived from ultramafic rock formations. It occurs within a very restricted geographical range in the South Province, primarily thriving in open maquis shrublands and dense tropical rainforests at elevations between 150 and 550 meters.

This evergreen conifer typically reaches impressive heights of 15 to 30 meters, characterized by a dominant, straight central trunk and a prominent candelabra-shaped crown. The outer bark is light gray and exfoliates in horizontal strips, which peels away to reveal a strikingly dark red inner bark beneath.

Juvenile specimens exhibit bright green, shiny foliage, whereas the leaves of mature adult trees are broad, heavily imbricate, and noticeably curved, measuring up to 33 millimeters in length. The species is monoecious, producing large cylindrical male strobili that transition from green to brown during maturation, alongside elliptical female cones that develop at the tips of young shoots.

Interesting facts

Prior to its formal botanical description, populations of this conifer were colloquially referred to by researchers as the 'Goro form' of A. muelleri. The species exhibits an exceptionally slow rate of growth, with mature generation times estimated to be around 400 years.

The conifer faces an existential threat from aggressive open-pit nickel mining operations and the associated infrastructural development across New Caledonia. With an estimated global population of only 2,000 mature individuals restricted to a fragmented area, random environmental events like severe droughts or catastrophic wildfires could rapidly precipitate its extinction.
