Steep ridges and dense montane shrublands in New Caledonia provide the sole refuge for Araucaria mackeei. This remarkable conifer species evolved in deep isolation, adapting to some of the most challenging geological conditions found in the Pacific. Discovered and named in honor of botanist Hugh S. MacKee, it remains one of the least known members of its ancient genus.
Specimens grow as medium-sized trees, typically reaching heights between 15 and 30 meters, with an open, irregular crown. The adult foliage is composed of broad, overlapping, ovate scales that completely conceal the underlying twigs. Mature seed cones are large, heavily lignified, and possess distinct sharply pointed bracts, a defining feature for many New Caledonian species.
