Araucaria schmidii: The Rare Mont Panié Conifer

Endemic to the island of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, Araucaria schmidii stands as a rare and majestic evergreen conifer belonging to the family Araucariaceae. This medium to large tree can reach impressive heights of up to 30 meters in its natural habitat. It remains highly unique among New Caledonian araucarias because it completely avoids ultramafic substrates, preferring to grow on sedimentary rock formations such as schist.

Morphology

The tree exhibits an upright growth habit with numerous ascending, pinnate branches arranged in a distinctive U-shaped pattern. The gray bark is notable for exfoliating in long strips measuring 10 to 15 centimeters in width.

Juvenile leaves are lanceolate, keeled, and needle-like, featuring an incurved apex. Adult leaves are tightly imbricate (overlapping like roof tiles), ovate-lanceolate, and also possess a distinctly incurved tip.

Male pollen cones develop at the very top of the canopy, reaching about 5 centimeters in length. Female seed cones are terminal, broadly ovoid, and glaucous when mature, measuring 9 to 11 centimeters in length.

Interesting facts

This rare botanical treasure is confined to a tiny area of less than one square kilometer on the summit and highest slopes of Mont Panié. It exclusively thrives in high-altitude cloud forests between 1,500 and 1,630 meters.

Due to its highly restricted range and exceptionally small population size, it remains vulnerable to stochastic environmental events. Conservationists express significant concern that the entire population could be devastated by the introduction of fungal pathogens, such as Phytophthora, potentially brought in by visiting eco-tourists.
