The prehistoric species Araucaria taieriensis thrived in the Southern Hemisphere during the Late Cretaceous period. Its fossilized remains were discovered within the macrofloras of eastern Otago in New Zealand. Described by botanist Mike Pole in 1995, it provides crucial insights into ancient gymnosperm ecosystems.

Morphology

The morphological structure is based on the analysis of fossilized macroremains. The plant featured stiff, spirally arranged leaves characteristic of Mesozoic conifer forests. Reproductive organs consisted of dense cones with scales adapted to the ancient temperate climate, typical of the family Araucariaceae.

Interesting facts

The discovery of these fossils in New Zealand has significantly expanded our understanding of the distribution of Araucariaceae in ancient temperate rainforests. The findings highlight the diverse flora that existed in eastern Otago millions of years ago.
