It typically grows as a large tree reaching heights of up to 20 meters, with a trunk diameter of up to 1 meter. The species is named in honor of Paul Guillaume Farges, a French missionary and amateur botanist who collected the type specimen.

The tree thrives in coniferous, mixed, and broad-leaved forests at elevations between 1,000 and 3,400 meters. Over the past 150 years, its populations have declined significantly due to deforestation. As a result, it is classified as a threatened species under conservation protection.

Morphology

The physical characteristics of Torreya fargesii distinguish it from other members of the genus. Its bark is pale brown to grayish-brown, showing irregular vertical cracks, and its branches ascend to form a broad crown.

Key morphological features include:

  • Needles: Linear to linear-lanceolate, measuring 1.2 to 3.5 centimeters long. They are glossy green on top and have two light-gray stomatal bands on the underside.
  • Pollen cones: Pale yellow, growing solitary in needle axils, measuring 5 to 6 millimeters in length.
  • Seeds and Arils: The mature aril is fleshy, pale green, and egg-shaped, enclosing a smooth seed that matures over two years.
  • Aroma: Unlike other nutmeg trees, its needles do not release an aromatic fragrance when crushed.

Pollination occurs from April to May, and seeds ripen from September to October after two years.
