Torreya jackii: The Endangered Longleaf Torreya of China

Inhabiting the shaded, steep slopes of eastern China, the rare conifer Torreya jackii is highly valued for its aromatic properties. Found in the provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangxi, this species typically grows as an understory tree near moist stream banks at elevations between 120 and 1320 meters.

Due to historical logging and agricultural expansion, its wild populations have experienced a severe decline. Today, it is recognized as a threatened species, receiving protection within Chinese nature reserves like the Jiangshi Nature Reserve.

Taxonomy

Morphology

Characterized by a shrubby habit or growing as a small evergreen tree up to 12 meters tall, Torreya jackii features a narrow, open crown. The bark is grey to dark grey, exfoliating in thick scales to reveal a pale brown inner layer.

The linear to linear-lanceolate needles are the longest and narrowest in the genus, measuring 3 to 7 centimeters long on mature branches, and up to 23 centimeters on young shoots. They are glossy green on the upper surface and feature two distinct silvery-grey stomatal bands underneath.

Its seeds are obovoid, measuring 2 to 3 centimeters in length, wrapped in a smooth aril that transitions from a glaucous white to a reddish-yellow color when fully mature in autumn.

Applications

The hard, durable wood of Torreya jackii is traditionally utilized in China for crafting agricultural tools and utensils. Additionally, its foliage and bark contain bioactive compounds that have attracted interest in oncological research for cancer treatments.

When crushed or burned, the needles emit a highly aromatic fragrance reminiscent of sandalwood, which is sometimes used locally for its pleasant scent.

Interesting facts

The specific epithet jackii honors the Canadian-American dendrologist John George Jack, who mentored the Chinese botanist Woonyong Chun at the Arnold Arboretum. Chun later described the species in 1925.

An unusual adaptation of this conifer is its fleshy root bark, which is capable of storing water. This physiological feature enables the tree to withstand prolonged dry spells despite its preference for humid riparian zones.
