Morphology

Mature specimens of this species exhibit a massive, incredibly straight trunk that grows largely free of lateral branches for a considerable height. The upper crown is typically relatively small, flat-topped, or openly pyramidal in extremely old trees. The external bark is dark brown to purplish-brown, naturally exfoliating in horizontal, papery flakes.

The leathery leaves are distinctly flat, broadly lanceolate to ovate, and lack the sharp, spiny terminal tips found in many other Araucaria species. Male cones are cylindrical and produced in dense clusters, whereas the female seed cones are massive, ovoid structures bearing numerous large seeds.

Applications

The tree is highly regarded internationally as a premium tropical timber species. Its pale yellow wood is lightweight yet surprisingly strong, featuring an exceptionally uniform texture throughout. Historically, it has been utilized extensively in the commercial production of high-quality plywood, architectural veneer, and general construction materials.
