Inhabiting the dry brushlands of southern Texas and northeastern Mexico, Castela erecta subsp. texana thrives within the challenging environments of the Tamaulipan matorral. The shrub stands out for its intricate branching pattern and sharp, pale-tipped spines. Its deep root system allows it to withstand prolonged droughts in rocky limestone soils.
This subspecies forms an upright, intricately branched shrub reaching 1 to 2.5 meters in height. The bark is grey and smooth on older stems, while young twigs are green and covered with a fine puberulence. The leaves are linear-lanceolate to narrow-elliptic, measuring up to 1.5 cm long, with grey-green surfaces and rolled margins.

Local inhabitants in its native range sometimes use the bitter bark to extract compounds used in traditional remedies. The dense growth form provides excellent nesting cover and protection for desert birds and small mammals. It is also cultivated occasionally in xeriscaping or native plant gardens to attract local pollinators.
Due to the extremely bitter taste of its foliage, this plant is commonly referred to as amargoso in Spanish-speaking regions. The bitter principle, amargosin, is a quassinoid compound that effectively deters most mammalian herbivores. Birds, however, consume the bright red drupes readily and assist in dispersing the seeds across its arid range.
