Castela galapageia f. carolensis: Floreana Bitterbush Form

Restricted to the dry scrublands of Floreana Island, Castela galapageia f. carolensis showcases the remarkable floral diversity of the Galápagos. This plant thrives in barren volcanic soils and coastal transition zones.

Its compact, thorny structure is an evolutionary response to the challenging conditions of the island's arid belt. As an endemic form, it represents a critical component of the island's fragile xerophytic ecosystems.

Living Pulse

Morphology

This microphyllous shrub develops a compact, rounded form with highly branched, spine-tipped stems. The leaves are coriaceous, small, and optimized to minimize transpiration under the equatorial sun.

Its morphology is characterized by:

  • Stems: Intricately branched, woody, and covered in smooth grayish bark.
  • Foliage: Small, dark green to grayish leaves with recurved margins to protect stomata.
  • Flowers: Small, solitary or clustered in leaf axils, featuring small dark red petals.
  • Fruits: Fleshy, globose drupes, turning deep red when ripe, containing a single hard seed.

Applications

This taxon serves as a key ecological stabilizer, preventing wind and water erosion on dry volcanic slopes. Its dense thorny growth offers refuge to native reptiles, such as Galápagos lava lizards, and nesting birds.

The juicy drupes provide critical moisture and nutrients to land birds and iguanas during the dry season.

Interesting facts

The subspecific name carolensis is derived from Charles Island, which is the old English cartographic name for Floreana Island. Floreana was one of the first islands in the archipelago to be permanently settled by humans.

Like other plants in the genus Castela, its leaves and bark contain bitter principles that protect it from grazing by introduced goats and donkeys.
