This subspecies has evolved to withstand low temperatures and heavy snowfall. Its natural distribution is restricted to montane coniferous forests and rocky slopes.

Morphology

This subspecies differs from the typical variety by its shorter, narrower needles and more compact growth habit, which is an adaptation to alpine conditions. The needles are linear-lanceolate, measuring about 3 to 5 centimeters in length, and are arranged in flat ranks.

The underside of the needles features two white stomatal bands that are slightly narrower than those of the typical variety. As with other members of the genus, it is dioecious, with oval seeds surrounded by a fleshy aril that turns purplish-green when mature.
