Morphology
This subspecies differs from the typical form by its dwarf, procumbent habit, rarely exceeding 1 to 2 meters in height. The branches are flexible and lie close to the ground, allowing them to bend under heavy snowpacks. The root system is shallow but extensive, often producing layers from low-hanging branches.
The linear leaves are slightly shorter than those of the lowland varieties, arranged in dense, flat ranks. The fleshy, oval seed cones are produced on female plants and turn reddish-brown when fully ripe. These structures are adapted to dispersal by local forest rodents.
Flowering season
Pollen cones release pollen in late spring, usually from April to June as the snow melts.
Applications
Landscapers use this subspecies as a ground cover in cool-temperate rock gardens and alpine designs. Its low profile and dense evergreen foliage provide excellent year-round interest. It is particularly effective for stabilizing soil on steep, snowy slopes.
