Within the Qinling mountain range of China, the botanical variety Paulownia fortunei var. tsinlingensis grows as a distinct local population of the broader species. It is recognized as an infraspecific taxon under Paulownia fortunei. Its distribution is limited to temperate forest ecosystems in central China.
