Petiveria alliacea grows as an herbaceous perennial or subshrub, typically reaching heights between 30 and 200 centimeters. It develops a robust taproot and erect stems that can become somewhat woody at the base, ranging from finely pubescent to completely glabrous.
The alternate, simple leaves are slightly leathery and emit a powerful garlic-like aroma when bruised. The leaf blades measure up to 20 centimeters in length and 7 centimeters in width, featuring an elliptic to obovate shape, a cuneate base, and an acute to acuminate apex.
Its inflorescences consist of slender, often drooping racemes that measure between 8 and 40 centimeters in length. The distinctive fruit is a striated achene, 7 to 10 millimeters long, topped with one to three recurved hooks or spines that facilitate seed dispersal by attaching to animal fur.
Flowering occurs year-round in tropical regions, and from spring to autumn in the northernmost parts of its range.
