Jiulongshan nutmeg yew occupies a highly restricted range on the rocky slopes of Mount Jiulong. This rare variety grows alongside other montane conifers and broad-leaved species in protected reserve areas. Due to its narrow geographical distribution, it represents a high priority for local conservation initiatives.
Torreya grandis var. jiulongshanensis grows predominantly as a multi-stemmed shrub or a small tree. Its needles are shorter and often slightly falcate, which sets it apart from the typical variety. The branches are dense and spreading, forming a compact crown.
The seeds produced by this variety are relatively small and have a distinct obovoid-ellipsoid shape. They mature over a two-year cycle, protected by a thin aril that becomes purplish-green at maturity.
Local communities utilize the wood for small-scale carving and fuel, although its rarity limits commercial exploitation. It possesses potential value in forestry breeding programs as a source of genetic diversity for disease resistance. The tree is also occasionally grown in botanical gardens for scientific study.
This variety was discovered and described relatively recently in 1995 from Mount Jiulong in Zhejiang. It is considered an evolutionary relict, providing clues about the historical distribution of the genus Torreya in eastern China. Its restricted distribution makes it one of the rarest conifers in its native province.
